The Last Witch Hunter is a 2015 American urban fantasy action film directed by Breck Eisner and written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. The Last Witch Hunter

In the present day, Kaulder prevents a teenage witch from unintentionally destroying an airplane with weather-controlling runes. Kaulder is revealed to be working as a witch hunter for an organization called the Axe and Cross, which aims to keep the truce between humans and witches and either executes or imprisons the witches who break the law. He is aided by a priest called "Dolan", a tradition carried from the battle to destroy the Witch Queen.

The 36th Dolan tells Kaulder that he is retiring from his duties and has chosen a new Dolan for him, but dies in his sleep. Kaulder and the 37th Dolan deduce that 36 was murdered by a witch. While tracking down the witch, Kaulder finds traces of old dark magic, not seen since before he killed the Queen. It is revealed that 36 is not dead but under a dark magic spell that can only be broken if the witch that cast it is killed.

To get the rare ingredient to create another memory spell, they visit another witch, Danique. However, Danique casts an endless memory spell on Kaulder, planning to entrap him in his dream forever. Chloe, revealed to be a dream-walker, is able to enter his trance and free his mind and the pair escape. Kaulder asks Chloe to enter his mind and pull out the memory. He discovers that, though the Queen's body burned to ash, the first Dolan chose to spare her heart; if the heart was destroyed, Kaulder would die. They deduce that 36 was attacked because he knew of where the heart was hidden and was tortured into revealing its location. They also realize that Belial's real plan is to revive the Queen.

Leaving Chloe and the 37th Dolan behind, Kaulder goes to face Belial to prevent the Queen from returning. Though he kills Belial in a confrontation, the Queen reenters the world through the sacrifice of another witch and escapes into the city, stealing Kaulder's immortality. 36, who is recovering, encourages Kaulder to continue fighting.

The members of the Witch Council, who guard the Witches' Prison, are killed and the Queen plans to release another plague curse using the imprisoned witches as a magical power source. Using her dream walking ability, Chloe kills one of the prisoners, severing the connection of the Queen. Kaulder fights the Queen, and appears close to killing her, until 37 attacks him with grudge for killing his witch parents. He asks the Queen to give him magical power. She refuses and kills 37 and uses Chloe to complete the connection for the plague curse to form again. Kaulder summons lightning to his sword using the weather runes he confiscated from the young witch on the plane, and throws his sword into the Queen, burning her to ash. Kaulder prepares to kill both himself and the Queen's heart, but Chloe dissuades him, stating that there were things in the darkness worse than the Witch Queen that he needs to continue fighting.

Screenwriter Corey Goodman was largely influenced by talks with Vin Diesel, specifically about his Dungeons & Dragons witch hunter character.[7] Initially Timur Bekmambetov was to direct but was later replaced by Breck Eisner and Goodman's script was re-written by D.W. Harper before Melisa Wallack was brought on to work on the film's script.[8][9] Both were uncredited. The production filed for a film tax credit in Pennsylvania and was allocated a tax credit of $14 million.[10][11] In February 2014, Vin Diesel posted a photo of the film's concept artwork to his Facebook page and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feitheimer commented that if successful, The Last Witch Hunter could become a film franchise.[12] In March 2014, Lakeshore Entertainment boarded the film as co-financier with Lionsgate, but Lakeshore quietly left the project. In July 2014, it was announced that Rose Leslie would be joining the cast as Vin Diesel's co-star,[13] and in August, Elijah Wood, Michael Caine, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson were also announced as attached to the film.[14][15][16] Julie Engelbrecht and Lotte Verbeek will also star.[17][18] In February 2015, Steve Jablonsky was hired to compose the film's score.

Principal photography for The Last Witch Hunter was initially delayed due to the death of Paul Walker,[19] as the death delayed shooting for Furious 7. Lionsgate officially began setting up for filming in Pittsburgh in June 2014.[19] The filming began on September 5, 2014, in Pittsburgh, as Diesel posted a first look of himself on Facebook.[20][21][22] The shoot lasted until December 5.[23]

If things were only a smidge cheerier we'd be in Jason and the Argonauts territory, and the film does seem like it could use a dose of Ray Harryhausen creature-feature magic. One eerie shot of a charred witch's still-beating heart being lifted out of her corpse by the tip of a sword gives hints as to what might have been with more physical effects and less CGI. The world-building itself, helped by three credited screenwriters, isn't all that inventive: Talk of an ancient truce, secret clubs where people get high on spells, and magic councils all get lost in the muddle. But director Breck Eisner (The Crazies) undercuts all that nonsense with charmingly incongruous jokes about cell phones, cab fare, and putting out demon blazes with fire extinguishers.

The witch huntin' runs out of gas in the homestretch, as do the threats of PG-13 eternal damnation. The color palette darkens, the action gets blurry, and interest in Kaulder's trials wanes. This doesn't bode well for the Witch Hunter sequel, which (witch?) is already in development. Dumb stuff only remains charming for so long. Of course, that's what everyone thought about the early years of the Fast & Furious franchise, so maybe there's no predicting immortality.

Diesel led that film as Kaulder, the warrior responsible for killing the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht) 800 years ago. The thing is though, before she goes, she puts an immortality curse on Kaulder. So, cut to the present day with Kaulder working for the Axe and Cross, a group dedicated to stopping witches. All is going well enough until Dolan the 36th (Michael Caine) is attacked and Kaulder discovers the Witch Queen is behind it.

Also starring Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood and Michael Caine, The Last Witch Hunter is directed by Breck Eisner (The Crazies) and follows an immortal witch hunter who partners with his natural enemy, a female witch (Leslie), to stop the covens of New York City from unleashing a plague on humanity.

Recognizing that some of these witches may still desire to seek vengeance against the man who killed their queen, a succession of Catholic priests from a clandestine order has been assigned to watch over Kaulder. His current protector, called Dolan 36th (Michael Caine), is aging. Knowing their close friendship is about to make the inevitable transition, Dolan 37th (Elijah Wood) is introduced. The two parties of this fledgling relationship receive little time to get acquainted because Dolan 36th mysteriously dies and the two are forced to investigate the suspicious circumstances together. Delving into the underworld for answers, Kaulder meets Chloe (Rose Leslie). But is this beautiful witch someone he can trust or just part of a devious plan to revive the once-thought-dead Witch Queen?

From the Studio:The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including KAULDER, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful QUEEN WITCH, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the QUEEN curses KAULDER with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today KAULDER is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to KAULDER, the QUEEN WITCH is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.Written by Lionsgate

Towards the end of the movie, Chloe (Rose Leslie) convinces Kaulder (Vin Diesel) to not destroy the witches heart and to continue living. She justifies her request and then says "besides, you still owe me $50,000". The interchanges is a paraphrase of a conversation between Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in The Fast and The Furious where Dom says to Brian "besides, you still owe me a ten second car"

Now in the modern day, with a lucrative career in the witch-killing business, Kaulder uncovers a sinister plot that threatens the alliance between witches and humans. With the ability to jump through the dream world and the real world, Kaulder begrudgingly teams up with his priest buddy (the perpetually baby-faced Elijah Wood) and a foxy yet friendly witch named Chloe (Rose Leslie). Together, they must uncover the secret behind this enchanted conspiracy, for the fate of the world rests in their hands.

Vin Diesel, a veteran of the Riddick science fiction action franchise, will star as the titular last witch hunter. Diesel will be starring alongside Elijah Wood, who portrayed Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy; Rose Leslie, best known for her television role as Ygritte on Game of Thrones; and Sir Michael Caine. Breck Eisner, the director of The Crazies and Sahara, has the helm on The Last Witch Hunter. Vin Diesel is also one of the producers of the film, alongside Mark Canton and Bernard Goldmann. 041b061a72
